Grand Seiko’s latest timepieces draw inspiration from the beauty and calm of Japanese gardens

The Chisen Teien, or Japanese pond garden, serves as the central inspiration behind two new Grand Seiko European exclusive timepieces

At the heart of Grand Seiko is a celebration of the spirituality of time. The brand’s approach to craftsmanship is based upon the Japanese philosophy of cherishing subtle changes in nature that unfold with each passing moment.

A key symbol of these natural fluctuations and seasonal shifts is the Japanese garden – specifically the Chisen Teien, or Japanese pond garden – which serves as the central inspiration behind two new Grand Seiko European exclusive timepieces.

The deep blue dial of the Spring Drive European Boutique Exclusive (SBGY040G), encased by an 18-carat gold case – recalls the ripples on the surface of a pond, utilising a pattern in the style of traditional Japanese Wagara – ancient designs based on traditional customs and nature, used on daily items like kimonos, porcelain and interior décor.

The SBGY040G is powered by the exclusive Seiko 9R Spring Drive Calibre, which commemorates its 20th anniversary this year. This movement causes the second hand to glide smoothly across the dial, once again conveying the delicate transition of time and the subtle transience of nature’s beauty.

For the Mechanical European Exclusive (SBGW321), nishikigoi, or iridescent carp fish – a key fixture of a Chisen Teien pond – provided the inspiration. The presence of these ‘swimming jewels’ in ponds has been welcomed by Japanese society since the practice of viewing ornamental carp began in the 9th century. With its vivid red dial and gold-toned accents, the SBGW321G’s dial evokes the decorative quality of nishikigoi, while a radial spiral dial pattern that extends outwards from the centre calls to mind the carp’s shimmering scales reflected by sunlight on the pond.
