Q&A with Gabriel Chipperfield

We asked real estate developer Gabriel Chipperfield a few questions on life, style, and the people and places that matter most to him

Here at Gentleman’s Journal, we have a keen eye for identifying figures at the forefront of their respective industries. That’s why we’ve embarked on a series of insightful conversations with industry leaders, delving deeper into their interests and perspectives. Below, we put London-based real estate developer and project manager Gabriel Chipperfield in the hot seat…

The best restaurant in the world is…

A walk-in bar restaurant in Barcelona called Cal Pep.

Your favourite hotel…

Our hotel in Margate, Kent, The Fort Road Hotel.

The city destination you never tire of is…

New York. My wife is from there and whilst I am there more than her these days it’s somewhere that always excites me and is a substantial contrast to my life in London.

Cal Pep in Barcelona; Gabriel's beer of choice

The drink order that never disappoints is…

An Estrella Galicia beer or a dirty vodka Martini – any vodka will do if the rest is right.

Your perfect holiday…

A place of natural beauty, on a boat, far from anyone I know (apart from my family).

The menswear brand you rate…

Sunspel, Trunk or Anglo-Italian, all in Marylebone, London.

The best gift you have ever received…

My two boys, Cy & Ivo.

Fort Road Hotel; Regent's Park

The last thing you bought and loved…

A painting by my friend Tracey Emin. She told me a long time ago to buy one but I ignored her and now I have had to pay the price. Literally…

The book everyone should read before they die is…

Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.

The best piece of advice you have received…

The more you do, the more you have time to do!

The person in your career you admire most…

My father [David Chipperfield] – I always think about what he would say or do, although I sometimes then do the opposite.

Sunspel in Marylebone; a Tracey Emin painting

The quote you live by…

'Always forgive your enemies, nothing annoys them so much’.

The advice you would give to some starting out in your profession…

See and experience as much as you can, make sure you love what you are doing – and then try and do it better than anyone else.

Your biggest luxury…

A last minute weekend trip, somewhere in England or abroad.

What do you do to relax…

Cycle around Regent’s Park on a sunny morning or evening before or after work. Or lie in the bath...
