Sober and serious, Tissot’s new PRX Powermatic 80 Carbon brings a restrained style to the office

Kitted out in a near-all-black scheme, this is a subtle standout among the Swiss house’s latest releases

One key message that Tissot, the Swiss watchmaker from the Le Locle mountains, tries to get across is that its products accompany ‘individuals in every moment, celebrating not only the achievements, but the journey itself.’ For its latest offerings – a set of new additions to the PRX line, which is known for its everyday wearability – the aim was to create wristwear that would bring a hit of style to the workplace.

These creations build on the PRX collection that was first launched in 1978, and, in typical Tissot style, tradition has been given a fresh spin, with several vibrant tones, including two fading dials (transitioning from either black or ice-blue to a metallic-blue reflection) and mint, being introduced. They’re what the brand calls essential companions ‘for today’s trailblazing professional.’

Yet, with our usual preference for more dialled-down designs, we’re quite keen on the muted Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 40mm Carbon. This high-tech variant, as its name suggests, is produced from a 40mm forged-carbon case, making each piece unique, and offers both a light touch as well as a robust design.

Pure versatility comes from the near-all-black look, from the date window to the rubber bracelet (this style of strap is not seen on the other additions). The result is a sporty, rugged appearance that’s suited not only for the desk, but also for environments beyond, a notion underlined by the fact it’s water-resistant to 100m; makes use of sapphire crystal, which is revered for its scratch resistance and stands only second to diamond in terms of toughness; and has great legibility thanks to lumed indices and hour and minute baton hands.

Adding further substance to the sleek style, the mechanical movement, which is ‘powered by the energy of the person who wears it,’ lays claim to a power reserve of up to 80 hours, and the Nivachron™ balance spring not only reduces magnetic-field interference, but is also resistant to aging, changes in temperature and shocks.

For maximum impact when walking into the boardroom, we suggest pairing the piece with items of an equally pared-down spirit: a two-piece navy suit and a white poplin shirt should do the trick.
